We understand that seeing a Psychologist (for the first, or tenth, time!) can be daunting. The first few sessions (what we call the intake process) will be about understanding you. Questions we may ask include what’s brought you here today, how long have you been experiencing these challenges for, what’s worked well for you in the past, your medical history, family history, developmental history, occupational history, and anything else that may help us understand you.
We understand that it can take time to feel comfortable with a Psychologist, and encourage you to share only what you’re comfortable with. After the intake sessions, your Psychologist will work with you to explore a therapy plan and how they got to this. From here, you will have an opportunity to discuss this further with your Psychologist.

Sessions are 50-minutes. Your Psychologist will endeavour to keep to the time to ensure that a timely service is provided to you, and the next client! We appreciate that it can be easy to lose track of the time which is why your Psychologist may provide some gentle reminders, or discuss ways to manage time in session. We kindly ask clients to understand the nature of our work and that on rare occasions, your Psychologist may be late due to unforeseen circumstances. Where possible, this will be communicated to you. Please also ensure that you are on time for your sessions.

As much as we appreciate word-of-mouth referrals, unfortunately this isn't something we're able to do. As psychologists, we are bound by the Psychology Board of Australia's Code of Conduct, which requires us to avoid multiple relationships where they could impact professional judgement or the therapeutic relationship.
We recommend that you check out the Find a Psychologist tool on The Australian Psychological Society (APS) website (https://psychology.org.au/find-a-psychologist) or speak with your GP for other referral options. Good luck!
This also means that a psychologist is generally unable to provide both ongoing therapy and a psychological assessment for the same client, as assessments require an independent and objective perspective. If you're unsure whether this applies to you, please feel free to get in touch!
